Greenhouse operations often focus on systems, yields, and technology, but behind every successful growing operation is a well-trained, adaptable team.
Head grower at Sunterra Greenhouse Luis-Gabriel Forero believes that one of the most overlooked aspects of greenhouse success is people development. Drawing from his experience in both traditional and indoor farming, he emphasizes that sustainable operations grow both plants and people.
“Growing People” as a Leadership Philosophy
Gabriel credits his time in the cannabis industry with shaping how he approaches leadership.
“Besides growing the crops, I like to grow people. I think I did well with my team – they’re now thriving here in Canada, in Europe, and the US. That’s what I keep from my time with cannabis: not only the plants, but the good connections and the growth of people.”
In fast-paced greenhouse environments, skilled and confident employees are essential. When workers feel invested in and supported, operations become more resilient.
Adaptability as a Core Skill
One of the most common gaps in agricultural training is lack of deep understanding. Teaching tasks without explaining why they matter limits problem-solving ability. Gabriel stresses that when workers understand the reasoning behind procedures, they can:
- Identify issues earlier
- Adapt to unexpected changes
- Take ownership of outcomes
This approach reduces costly mistakes and builds long-term capacity within teams. Greenhouse work demands a certain level of flexibility. Equipment failures, system breakdowns, and shifting conditions are inevitable. This is why Gabriel advocates for training teams to think critically and respond calmly under pressure. These skills are developed over time through mentorship, repetition, and patience.
Labour and Training, in Canadian Greenhouses
Gabriel also highlights the role of Canada’s Foreign Worker Program in supporting greenhouse operations. Access to labour is essential, but long-term success depends on proper onboarding, education, and respectful leadership. Well-supported teams are more productive, more engaged, and more likely to stay.
As greenhouse agriculture continues to expand in Canada, the industry’s success will increasingly depend on people. Strong leadership, meaningful training, and continuous learning are not optional, but foundational.
